APSRTC Announces Free Bus Travel for Disabled Persons
APSRTC Announces Free Bus Travel for Disabled Persons in Andhra Pradesh
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has announced free bus travel for persons with disabilities in the state. The facility will be extended to individuals who have a 40 percent or more disability, according to the corporation.
The decision has been taken under the “Indra Dhanussu” initiative, which aims to improve accessibility and support for persons with disabilities through transport benefits.
Free Travel Across Multiple Bus Categories
APSRTC stated that the free travel facility will be available across several categories of buses operated by the corporation. These include City Ordinary, Metro Express, Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, and Express services.
Officials said the scheme is intended to ease mobility for disabled passengers, particularly those who rely on public transport for daily activities such as education, healthcare visits, and employment-related travel.
Concession for Assistants
Along with free travel for eligible disabled passengers, APSRTC has also announced a concession for accompanying assistants.
If a disabled passenger requires assistance during travel, the assistant will receive a 50 percent concession on the ticket fare. The measure has been introduced to ensure that persons with disabilities who need support can travel without facing additional financial burden.
Scheme Launch Scheduled for March 18
APSRTC Managing Director confirmed that the programme will be formally launched on March 18. The launch will be carried out by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, marking the official rollout of the transport benefit across the state.
Transport officials said the implementation will begin after the formal inauguration and will apply across APSRTC services mentioned in the announcement.
Telangana Government Rules Out Similar Benefit
In contrast, the Telangana government has clarified that no free bus travel facility is currently available for persons with disabilities in the state’s bus services.
Authorities in Telangana have stated that such a concession is not being implemented in their public transport system at present.
The difference in policy has drawn attention to how disability transport benefits vary between the two neighbouring states, particularly in the context of public mobility support.
