Telangana HC hearing on SRDP near KBR Park
Telangana High Court grants time in SRDP works near KBR Park
Bench hears PILs on SRDP and eco-sensitive zone
The Telangana High Court on Tuesday heard a batch of public interest litigations concerning the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) works around KBR Park in Hyderabad. The matters were taken up by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin.
The petitions raise issues related to ongoing construction activities and the applicability of the Eco-Sensitive Zone notification issued in 2020.
Petitioners flag ongoing construction activities
During the hearing, counsel for the petitioners informed the Bench that construction work on pavements in and around the KBR Park area was continuing. This was highlighted despite the Eco-Sensitive Zone notification remaining under challenge before the Court.
The petitioners have questioned whether such activities are permissible within the notified buffer zone.
State and Centre seek additional time
Appearing for the State, the Advocate General requested time to obtain updated instructions in view of the developments placed before the Court. The State indicated that further clarification was required on the issues raised.
The Additional Solicitor General of India, representing the Central Government, also sought time to place additional material on record. This includes the possibility of filing further affidavits.
Court permits further submissions
The Bench took note of the submissions and granted time to all parties involved in the case. It also allowed the petitioners to conduct further research on activities that are prohibited, regulated, or permitted within an Eco-Sensitive Zone buffer area.
The Court observed that clarity on these aspects would be necessary for further consideration of the matter.
Issues under challenge in PILs
The batch of PILs broadly challenges the legality of flyover construction under the SRDP around KBR Park. Concerns have also been raised regarding large-scale felling of trees in the area.
Additionally, the validity of the Eco-Sensitive Zone notification issued under the Environment (Protection) Act has been questioned.
Next hearing scheduled
After hearing the preliminary submissions, the Telangana High Court adjourned the matter. The next date of hearing has been posted to May 5, 2026.
The case will be taken up for further consideration based on additional material and submissions to be filed by all parties.
