Scholars Confirm Holika Dahan on March 3, Holi on March 4
Scholars Clarify Holi Dates as Confusion Emerges Over Festival Schedule
Uncertainty over the dates of Holi this year has been resolved with scholars citing the Drik Panchang calendar to confirm the official observance. According to the traditional calculations, Holika Dahan will be performed on March 3, while the festival of colours, Holi, will be celebrated on March 4.
The clarification follows widespread confusion among devotees regarding whether the festival should be marked on March 3 or March 4. Religious scholars stated that the timing of the Purnima Tithi determines the sequence of rituals associated with the festival.
Purnima Timing Determines Ritual Observance
As per the calendar, the Purnima Tithi begins at 5:55 PM on March 2 and concludes at 5:07 PM on March 3. Based on established religious practice, Holika Dahan is conducted on the evening when Purnima is in effect.
Following this tradition, the ceremonial burning of Holika will take place on the evening of March 3. The next day, March 4, is designated for celebrating Holi with colours, in accordance with customary practice observed across many regions.
Tradition and Public Observance
Religious scholars emphasised that the sequence of Holika Dahan followed by the colour festival is rooted in long-standing ritual tradition. Communities are expected to follow the clarified schedule to ensure uniform observance of the festival.
The announcement provides clarity for households, temples, and local administrations making arrangements for the festival, including public celebrations and safety measures associated with large gatherings.
