The latest report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received the highest share of political donations through electoral trusts in the 2024–25 financial year. Out of the total funds distributed, the BJP secured ₹3,157.65 crore, accounting for 82.52 percent of the total contributions.
The report highlights a significant gap between the BJP and other political parties in terms of financial support received during the period.
Distribution of Funds Among Political Parties
According to ADR, electoral trusts distributed a total of ₹3,826.35 crore to various political parties in 2024–25. The Indian National Congress received ₹298.78 crore, representing 7.81 percent of the total funds, while the Trinamool Congress secured ₹102 crore, or 2.67 percent.
The remaining ₹267.92 crore was distributed among 19 other political parties, indicating a wide disparity in funding levels across the political spectrum.
Major Corporate Contributors
The report lists Elevated Avenue Realty LLP as the highest donor, contributing ₹500 crore. Tata Sons followed with ₹308 crore, while Tata Consultancy Services contributed ₹217 crore. Megha Engineering also figured among the major donors with ₹175 crore.
These corporate contributions formed a substantial portion of the total political donations routed through electoral trusts during the financial year.
State-Wise Contribution Trends
State-wise analysis showed Maharashtra as the leading contributor, with donations amounting to ₹1,225 crore. Telangana ranked second, contributing ₹358 crore through electoral trusts.
The data reflects the geographic distribution of corporate funding linked to political contributions.
Compliance and Reporting by Electoral Trusts
India has 20 registered electoral trusts. Out of these, 10 trusts submitted donation details for the period under review. Five trusts reported receiving no donations, while reports from another five trusts were not available on the Election Commission website despite the reporting deadline having passed.
ADR noted that the total volume of donations could increase if pending disclosures are submitted.
