State Election Commission Announces Telangana Municipal Results
Congress Emerges as Largest Party
The Telangana municipal elections for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations concluded with the Congress securing 1,346 seats. The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) finished second with 723 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 261. The remaining wards were won by other parties and independent candidates.
The elections, held on February 11, recorded over 73 percent voter turnout. Counting of votes began at 8 AM on February 13 across 123 centers, starting with postal ballots, as ballot papers were used in the polling process.
Security and Counting Arrangements
The State Election Commission implemented strict measures to ensure smooth counting. Entry to counting halls was restricted, webcasting was arranged at all centers, and prohibitory orders were enforced around the premises. Nearly 12,000 police personnel and quick response teams were deployed to maintain law and order.
Officials monitored counting procedures closely, ensuring transparency and adherence to regulations throughout the process.
Political Stakes and Party Positions
The municipal elections were viewed as a significant political test for the ruling Congress and opposition parties, the BJP and the BRS. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed confidence in securing strong results, while BJP leader G Kishan Reddy remained optimistic about his party’s performance.
The BRS aimed to recover from recent electoral setbacks and sought to regain political momentum through the civic polls. The outcome is expected to influence the state’s urban political landscape.
Hung Municipalities and Role of Independents
In several municipalities, no party secured a clear majority. Independents, with 181 seats, emerged as key players in around 30 municipalities, including Jangaon, Isnapur, Kagaznagar, Gadwal, Jammikunta, Vemulawada, and Raikal, as well as Karimnagar and Nizamabad municipal corporations.
Political parties moved councilors to secure locations to prevent poaching ahead of the election of chairpersons and mayors scheduled for February 16. Negotiations continued as parties sought support from independents and smaller recognized parties.
Notable Result From Chityala
In a first for Telangana municipal polls, a transgender candidate, Nagilla Sudhakar, also known as Kaveri, won Ward 1 of Chityala municipality in Nalgonda district as an independent candidate. Sudhakar secured 429 votes, defeating CPM candidate Jitta Nagesh, who polled 327 votes. BRS nominee Rudravaram Yadaiah received 198 votes, and BJP’s Rudravaram Linga Swamy secured 45 votes.
Chityala municipality has 12 wards, with Congress winning nine, BRS two, and independent candidate Sudhakar one seat. The development adds a notable dimension to the 2026 civic poll outcomes.
