Telangana Hospitals Face Medicine, Equipment Shortage
Telangana Government Faces Scrutiny Over Shortage in Public Hospitals
Critical Equipment and Medicines in Short Supply
Government-run hospitals in Telangana are facing a shortage of essential medical equipment and medicines, affecting the delivery of emergency healthcare services. The issue has come into focus following concerns raised over the current state of public healthcare facilities.
Reports indicate that key treatments, including life-saving procedures, are being disrupted due to the unavailability of necessary supplies. The situation has triggered questions over administrative handling of healthcare resources in the state.
Cardiac Procedures Hit by Stent Shortage
Heart-related treatments are among the most impacted. Due to a shortage of stents, over 100 angioplasty procedures conducted daily have been affected.
In cases of heart attacks, delays in providing immediate treatment have increased risks to patients. The lack of critical cardiac equipment has directly impacted emergency response capabilities in government hospitals.
Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeries Affected
Trauma and orthopaedic cases are also facing disruptions. The absence of implants required for spine and bone surgeries has complicated treatment for accident victims.
Hospitals have been forced to postpone several surgeries due to the shortage of essential materials. This has added to the burden on both patients and healthcare providers.
Other Surgeries Witness Delays
Shortages of medical items such as catheters and valves have led to delays in other major surgical procedures. Hospitals are currently managing with limited resources, prioritising only emergency care.
Routine and planned surgeries are being deferred, affecting overall hospital functioning.
Financial Dues Behind Supply Disruptions
The disruption in supply has been linked to pending payments exceeding ₹80 crore. Vendors have reportedly stopped supplying medicines and equipment due to non-payment of dues.
As a result, nearly 90% of medicines and implants are not available in these hospitals. Only emergency medicines are being provided at present.
Patients Forced to Seek Costly Alternatives
The shortage has pushed many patients towards private hospitals, leading to increased financial burden. Economically weaker sections are either delaying treatment or foregoing it altogether.
In emergency situations, the lack of timely care has raised concerns over patient safety and outcomes.
Key Hospitals Affected Across Telangana
The issue has been reported in several major government hospitals, including Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer Hospital, and Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.
These institutions cater to a large patient base, making the disruption significant at the state level.
Situation May Worsen Without Immediate Action
The suppliers’ association has already raised concerns over the situation. If pending dues are not cleared and supplies are not restored, the crisis may intensify further.
The current condition highlights the need for immediate administrative intervention to restore normal healthcare services.
