Centre Transfers Shiv Pratap Shukla as Telangana Governor
Centre Transfers Himachal Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla to Telangana
The Central Government has appointed Shiv Pratap Shukla as the new Governor of Telangana, replacing Jishnu Dev Varma. Shukla, who is currently serving as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, will be transferred to Telangana as part of the latest gubernatorial changes.
The decision comes amid a wider reshuffle in which the Centre initiated changes involving nine governors across the country. The move followed developments after the resignation of West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, which triggered a series of administrative adjustments.
Earlier, the Centre had formally announced the appointment through an official notification. More details on the appointment were reported earlier in this article.
Long Political Career in Uttar Pradesh
Shiv Pratap Shukla is considered a senior leader with a long political background in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was born in Rudrapur village in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
During the 1975 Emergency, Shukla was arrested under the MISA law and spent nineteen months in jail. He later pursued a law degree and became active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), serving as an organisational secretary in the BJP’s student wing.
Shukla formally joined the BJP in 1983 and began his electoral career soon after.
Electoral and Ministerial Roles
In 1989, he was elected as the MLA from Gorakhpur city for the first time. He was re-elected to the Assembly again in 1991.
During the government led by Kalyan Singh, Shukla served as Minister of State for Education. He later continued his political career with multiple terms as MLA and served as a minister in governments headed by Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, and Rajnath Singh in Uttar Pradesh.
His long association with the BJP and administrative experience positioned him for further responsibilities at the national level.
Role in the Union Government and the Rajya Sabha
Shukla later moved to national politics and became a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh. In September 2017, he took charge as Minister of State in the Union Finance Ministry.
He served in that position until July 5, 2022, when his Rajya Sabha term concluded.
After a brief gap, the Centre appointed him as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh on February 18, 2023.
Administrative Style as Governor
During his tenure in Himachal Pradesh, Shukla’s functioning occasionally drew attention due to differences with the Congress-led state government.
One of the notable points of disagreement involved the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in universities. The issue led to differences between the Governor’s office and the state administration.
In addition, during the Himachal Pradesh Assembly budget session earlier this month, Shukla did not read certain paragraphs from the prepared Governor’s address, which became a topic of discussion.
With his transfer to Telangana, the Centre has brought a senior political figure with decades of experience into the gubernatorial role in the state.
