Australia has opted for a pace-dominated lineup for the fourth Ashes Test at the MCG, dropping spinner Todd Murphy following Nathan Lyon’s injury. Meanwhile, England face another setback in the already one-sided series, as Jofra Archer has been ruled out, adding to their struggles at 3-0 down.
Nathan Lyon, who picked up a serious hamstring injury during Australia’s Ashes-sealing victory in Adelaide, later required surgery. Although off-spinner Todd Murphy was initially added to the squad, Australia dropped him after assessing the grassy MCG surface. As a result, the pace-heavy selection will move forward without a second spinner. Captain Steve Smith will finalize the playing XI at the toss on Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
England’s campaign faltered early as they dropped the opening three Tests, allowing Australia to secure the Ashes within just 11 days of play. It’s rare for Australia to go without a specialist spinner at the MCG, a ground historically known for successful spin spells from legends like Shane Warne and Nathan Lyon.
Speaking on Thursday, Steve Smith explained the decision:
“Most of the pitches we’ve played on recently have favoured seamers rather than spin. Adelaide was a rare exception where there was some rough, and Nathan Lyon became a major factor. You simply have to adjust to the pitch you get, and this surface appears to heavily support fast bowling.”
Along with Lyon and captain Pat Cummins being unavailable, Josh Inglis also misses out. Their absence has opened the door for fast bowlers Jhye Richardson, Brendan Doggett, and Michael Neser to be included in the squad.
Usman Khawaja, the experienced left-hander, keeps his place after scoring 82 and 40 in the previous Test in Adelaide, edging out Inglis. Richardson could make his first Test appearance in over four years following a difficult injury stretch. Doggett and Neser, who featured in the Brisbane Test, were left out during the Adelaide match when Cummins and Lyon returned to the lineup.
England confirmed their XI on Wednesday, with the major setback being the loss of pace star Jofra Archer for the remainder of the series, including the fifth and last Test scheduled for January 4 in Sydney.
