Jio Hotstar Secures Streaming Rights to The Raja Saab
Digital Release Planned After Mixed Theatrical Run
The Prabhas-starrer The Raja Saab, directed by Maruthi, is set to move to the digital space following its theatrical release on January 9. The film opened in cinemas with strong initial numbers but later witnessed a slowdown after receiving mixed to negative reviews across markets.
Made on a large scale, the film was positioned as a major release this season. While early footfalls were encouraging, audience response over the following days impacted its overall box office momentum.
Jio Hotstar Secures Post-Theatrical Streaming Rights
Post-theatrical streaming rights of The Raja Saab are reported to have been acquired by Jio Hotstar. The deal is said to be valued at around ₹80 crore and covers all language versions of the film, including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
As part of the agreement, there is a performance-linked clause tied to the film’s box office collections. Reports indicate that if the film’s earnings exceed ₹200 crore, the producers will receive an additional ₹10 crore for every ₹100 crore earned thereafter. No official confirmation has been issued so far regarding the digital premiere date.
Box Office Performance and Budget Considerations
The film was produced on a high budget, with estimates suggesting costs crossed ₹400 crore. It registered solid collections during its opening days before seeing a sharp decline. At present, The Raja Saab is reported to have crossed ₹250 crore at the worldwide box office.
The producers are expected to rely significantly on non-theatrical revenue streams, including digital rights, to offset production expenses.
Storyline and Cast Details
The Raja Saab marks a shift from Prabhas’s recent action-heavy roles, presenting him in a comic setting. The film blends horror and humor, with emotional elements woven into the narrative.
Prabhas plays Raju, who inherits an old ancestral mansion believed to be haunted. His grandmother, Gangadevi, suffers from Alzheimer’s and searches for her missing husband, Kanakaraju, whose past is closely linked to the mansion’s hidden history.
The cast includes Sanjay Dutt, Malavika Mohanan, and Nidhhi Agerwal. Music and background score for the film have been composed by Thaman S.
