India U-19 Defeats New Zealand, Secures Super-6 Spot in World Cup
Rain-Reduced Match Sets the Context
India Under-19 continued their strong run in the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 with a seven-wicket win over New Zealand Under-19, sealing qualification for the Super-6 stage. The 24th match of the tournament was affected by rain at the Queens Sports Club ground, resulting in both teams playing a reduced contest of 13 overs per side.
After the delayed start, Indian captain Ayush Mhatre won the toss and chose to bowl. The decision proved effective as the New Zealand batting line-up struggled to cope with disciplined bowling and regular breakthroughs.
New Zealand Collapses After Early Setbacks
New Zealand’s innings never gained momentum. The side lost five wickets within the first 10 overs, putting pressure on the middle order. Aryan Mann was dismissed without scoring, while Hugo Bough managed four runs. Captain Tom Jones was out for two, Snehit Reddy scored 10, and Marco Williams added just one.
A brief recovery came through a 37-run partnership between Jacob Cotter and Jaskaran Sandhu. Sandhu was dismissed for 18, while Cotter contributed 23. Selvin Sanjayan scored 28, but the innings failed to build further. Flynn Moore and Mason Clark were dismissed cheaply, while Callum Samson remained unbeaten on 37 to push the total to 135 before the side was bowled out.
India’s bowlers shared the workload effectively. Ambris led the attack with four wickets, Henil Patel picked up three, while Khilan Patel, Mohammad Anan, and Kanishk Chauhan claimed one wicket each.
Mhatre, Suryavanshi Steady the Chase
India’s chase began with an early setback as Aaron George was dismissed for seven. However, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre stabilised the innings with a decisive 76-run partnership that shifted the match firmly in India’s favour.
Suryavanshi scored 40, striking two fours and three sixes. Mhatre anchored the chase with a match-winning 53, including two fours and six sixes. The remaining runs were completed calmly by Vihaan Malhotra and Vedant Trivedi, who scored 17 and 13, respectively.
For New Zealand, Mason Clark, Jaskaran Sandhu, and Selvin Sanjayan took one wicket each.
Strong Position in Super-6
The win marked India’s third consecutive victory in the tournament and confirmed their place in the Super-6 round. The performance further underlined the form of key players, including Suryavanshi, whose leadership journey has been highlighted earlier in a report on his captaincy moment: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Faces the Toughest Lesson as India U19 Seal Historic Clean Sweep.
