Sankranti Cockfighting Losses Rattle TDP Circles
Sankranti festivities see a surge in cockfighting arenas
Large-scale cockfighting events were organised across the twin Godavari districts, the undivided Krishna region, and Guntur during the three-day Sankranti festival period. The traditional gatherings, locally known as pandems, drew significant crowds and betting activity, despite long-standing legal restrictions and repeated warnings from authorities.
The events were held in multiple locations simultaneously, with organizers banking on heavy festive footfall and high wagering volumes.
High-stakes bets and rising expectations
Cockfighting, by its nature, carries the risk of heavy losses along with the promise of quick gains. This year proved no different. Several organizers, including leaders linked to the Telugu Desam Party, reportedly invested large sums, anticipating substantial profits over the festival period.
In the twin Godavari districts alone, investments were said to have ranged between Rs 30 crore and Rs 50 crore. Similar arrangements in the undivided Krishna and Guntur regions reportedly involved investments of around Rs 20 crore to Rs 25 crore.
Losses trigger unease within political circles
Contrary to expectations, many organizers are said to have suffered unexpected losses. Political circles within the TDP are abuzz with discussion that a significant number of party leaders failed to recover even their initial investments, let alone secure profits.
Some leaders are believed to have partnered with close associates to organise arenas, pooling resources with the expectation that returns would double within three days.
Auctioned arenas and proxy arrangements
Sources familiar with the developments say several cockfighting arenas were auctioned in advance. While the auctions were conducted formally, the arenas allegedly ended up in the hands of proxies loyal to key organizers.
However, poor coordination, lack of control over betting outcomes, and rival groups gaining control of certain betting segments reportedly contributed to financial setbacks.
Internal discussions and silent distress
The issue has reportedly reached the party’s central office, where a few leaders are said to have discussed the losses informally. It has emerged that some organizers diverted funds originally set aside for future contracts or political activities into these bets.
Publicly, there has been no acknowledgement of the losses. Privately, however, several leaders are said to be under financial strain, unsure of how to absorb the setback. Some are reportedly exploring alternative means to offset the losses.
Festive gamble leaves lasting impact
While Sankranti cockfighting remains a deeply rooted tradition in parts of coastal Andhra, this year’s outcomes have highlighted the financial risks involved. For several organizers, the festival gamble has ended not in celebration, but in quiet concern over mounting losses.
