YS Sharmila Urges Chandrababu Naidu to Withdraw Support to Centre
Allegations on the Centre’s Approach to Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president YS Sharmila has alleged that the Union government is showing indifference towards Andhra Pradesh on key commitments, including financial assistance and recognition of Amaravati as the state capital. She said the Centre has failed to address long-pending demands, causing continued hardship to the state.
Speaking from Amaravati, Sharmila stated that repeated appeals to the Union government had not yielded results. She argued that Andhra Pradesh continues to be denied funds and projects promised earlier.
Call to Reconsider Political Support
Sharmila urged Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu to reconsider extending support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Instead of merely requesting assistance from the Centre, she said political support should be withdrawn to press for the state’s interests.
She raised questions on the rationale behind backing the Union government when, according to her, Andhra Pradesh has not received its due share of funds or institutional support.
Objections to Employment Guarantee Changes
The APCC president also criticised the Centre’s approach to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. She opposed what she described as changes that weaken employment security for the poor and reduce the programme’s effectiveness.
Sharmila further referred to the VB-Giram-G scheme, stating that it imposes an increased financial burden on states. She pointed out that the revised funding pattern, with the Centre contributing 60 per cent and states bearing 40 per cent, was unfair to states already facing financial strain.
Demand for a Firm Stand on State Interests
Highlighting delays in the release of central funds and pending projects, Sharmila said Andhra Pradesh was being placed at a disadvantage. She questioned why continued support should be extended to the Union government under such circumstances.
She called for a more assertive approach to safeguard the state’s financial and administrative interests, stating that a firm political stand was necessary before further damage was done to Andhra Pradesh.
