The CBI is probing the stampede that occurred during a rally organised by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in which 41 people lost their lives.
Firm Stand Against BJP and NDA
Vijay has consistently described the BJP as his ideological opponent and has categorically rejected any form of alliance with the party, either directly or indirectly. His position also distances TVK from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which has renewed its ties with the BJP.
Minutes after Vijay returned to Chennai following his earlier questioning by the CBI, TVK Deputy General Secretary Nirmal Kumar reaffirmed the party’s stance, stating that there had been “no change in TVK’s ideological position.”
Film Certification Dispute Adds to Political Heat
The developments come amid uncertainty surrounding Vijay’s farewell film Jana Nayagan, which failed to secure certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in time for a Pongal release. The film’s producers have since moved the Supreme Court of India, seeking relief, while the CBFC has filed a caveat in response.
The delay has fuelled political accusations, with the Tamil Nadu Congress leadership alleging that the BJP was exerting pressure to force a political understanding with Vijay under the NDA framework.
Rahul Gandhi’s Intervention Sparks Alliance Talk
Speculation about a possible realignment ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections intensified after Rahul Gandhi publicly criticised the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the film’s certification issue.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi described the alleged blocking of Jana Nayagan as an attack on Tamil culture, asserting that attempts to suppress the voice of the Tamil people would fail.
Despite this, Congress leaders have maintained that their existing alliance with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) remains intact and is centred on power-sharing and seat allocation.
TVK Keeps Alliance Decisions Open
Although TVK has spoken about offering partners a share in power, it has yet to attract any major political party into a formal alliance. Addressing questions about a potential understanding with the Congress, Nirmal Kumar said that while the party welcomes support for Jana Nayagan, decisions on alliances rest solely with Vijay.
Meanwhile, the BJP has denied any involvement in the CBFC matter. Party spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said the certification process was purely procedural and dismissed claims of political interference.
