According to officials, women self-help group federations have already leased 152 buses to the state transport corporation. TSRTC provides drivers and conductors for these buses, while paying a monthly rental of Rs. 69,468 per vehicle.

Meanwhile, another 200 buses have completed body construction and are ready for launch. Authorities confirmed that an additional 248 buses are expected to be prepared by the end of March. With government approval, the TSRTC Women Self Help Group Buses rollout will begin operations in phases to meet rising passenger demand.
Earlier, the pilot phase covered Mahabubnagar, Karimnagar, and Warangal districts. The buses were financed through loans taken by women’s self-help groups and later placed under TSRTC hypothecation. Officials said this model has helped reduce operational pressure on the transport corporation.
The need for additional buses increased after the government introduced free travel for women under the Mahalaxmi scheme. Passenger numbers surged significantly, especially on district routes where buses often run at full capacity. Therefore, authorities accelerated fleet expansion through women-led transport participation.
According to transport department sources, the long-term target is to bring 600 buses into service under the scheme. Following the initial 152 buses, the remaining units are being deployed in stages. The latest batch under the TSRTC Women Self Help Group Buses rollout is expected to further ease congestion and improve travel convenience.
Passengers are already reporting smoother journeys with reduced crowding. Officials said the programme not only improves transport services but also strengthens financial independence among women’s self-help groups.
