Modi to Lay Foundation for Warangal, Adilabad Airports
Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Lay Foundation for Two New Airports in Telangana
The Telangana government is preparing to launch the construction of two new airports in the state, with foundation stone ceremonies expected to be held in June. The state administration plans to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally inaugurate the projects.
The proposed airports will be developed near Mamunoor in Warangal district and in Adilabad district. Both projects have already received approval from the Union government, allowing the state to move forward with land acquisition and preparatory works.
State Plans Foundation Ceremony in June
According to government plans, the foundation stone for the Mamunoor Airport near Warangal and the Adilabad Airport will be laid in June. The state government is currently working on arrangements for the event and intends to conduct the ceremony with the participation of the Prime Minister.
Officials indicated that land acquisition for both projects is progressing. Preparations are underway so that construction work can begin soon after the formal launch.
Mamunoor Airport Project Details
The Mamunoor Airport project near Warangal is estimated to require an investment of around ₹850 crore. Authorities have proposed developing the airport with architectural elements reflecting the culture and traditions of the Warangal region.
The project is expected to improve air connectivity in the northern parts of Telangana and reduce dependence on the existing airport in Hyderabad.
Adilabad Airport Development
The airport planned in Adilabad district will be developed across nearly 1,000 acres. So far, around 415 acres have been acquired, while an additional 700 acres are expected to be obtained to complete the land requirement.
The Telangana government had issued official orders on November 3, 2025, to begin the land acquisition process for the Adilabad airport project.
The proposed airport will include a runway of approximately 2.9 kilometres. Authorities estimate that around ₹400 crore will be required for its construction.
Civil and Defence Use Planned
Plans for the Adilabad airport include facilities for both civil aviation and defence-related operations. The runway is expected to accommodate both civilian and military aircraft.
Authorities have also proposed a parking arrangement for aircraft where only 15 percent rental charges will be collected.
Expanding Air Connectivity Across Telangana
Currently, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad in Hyderabad is the primary airport serving passengers in Telangana. With the development of airports in Warangal and Adilabad, officials expect improved flight connectivity for several districts across the state.
Officials believe that the new airports will also help reduce congestion at the Hyderabad airport.
Potential Regional Development
The government expects the airport projects to contribute to economic activity in Warangal and Adilabad districts. Increased connectivity could support tourism, attract companies and improve cargo movement in the region.
Authorities also expect that the projects will create employment opportunities for local youth and support the growth of logistics and related sectors.
