Telangana SIT Summons KTR in Phone Tapping Probe
Notice Issued After Harish Rao Questioning
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Telangana phone tapping case has issued a notice to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president KT Rama Rao. He has been asked to appear before investigators in Hyderabad on Friday at 11 am.
The notice follows the questioning of former minister and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao, who was examined earlier this week in connection with the same case. The SIT action marks a further widening of the investigation that began after the change of government in the state.
Allegations of Unauthorised Surveillance
The phone tapping case centres on allegations that the previous BRS government, led by former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, carried out illegal surveillance through the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB). The alleged targets included opposition leaders, political functionaries, and businesspersons.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar has stated that the probe is focused on examining claims of unauthorised and illegal interception, monitoring, and recording of phone calls on a large scale.
Case Registered After 2024 Regime Change
The case was registered in 2024 after the Congress government assumed office in Telangana. Former state intelligence chief T Prabhakar Rao has been named as the prime accused. Investigators are examining claims that more than one lakh phone calls were tapped during the previous regime.
An SIT was constituted to handle the probe, given the scale of the allegations and the involvement of senior police officials.
Arrests and Bail of Police Officials
Since March 2024, Hyderabad Police have arrested four police officials, including a suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police from the SIB. They were accused of erasing intelligence data from electronic devices and participating in illegal phone tapping activities. All four were later granted bail.
The SIT has already filed its first chargesheet against some of the accused, while further investigation continues into connected aspects of the case.
Harish Rao’s Examination and Probe Status
On June 20, Harish Rao was summoned to the Jubilee Hills Police Station and examined in detail by the investigation officer. Police officials clarified that his questioning was strictly related to the phone tapping case. He was allowed to leave early due to a personal commitment involving his son’s scheduled flight.
Officials have indicated that the investigation, underway since March 10, is progressing in stages, with senior political figures now being called for questioning as part of the expanding probe.
Political Developments Amid Investigation
The expansion of the probe comes amid broader political churn within the BRS, with reports also emerging about possible new political alignments in Telangana. Recent political buzz around K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha and strategist Prashant Kishore has added to the evolving political backdrop in the state, as detailed in a report on Prashant Kishore’s likely role in K Kavitha’s proposed Telangana party.
