Preparations are underway in Telangana for the next round of municipal elections, with the State Election Commission initiating key procedural steps. The final revised voter lists for all municipalities have already been published, along with the confirmation of reservations. The formal election notification is expected next month.
With the groundwork in place, political parties across the state have begun internal preparations, recalibrating strategies for what is seen as a crucial test of urban political strength.
MIM Confirms Full-Scale Contest
In this backdrop, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has announced its decision to contest the upcoming municipal elections in Telangana. Party president Asaduddin Owaisi stated that the party would enter the elections in full strength and has opened applications for aspirants seeking MIM tickets.
Owaisi called upon interested candidates to submit their applications to the party office, making it clear that only those who adhere to party discipline and principles will be considered. He underlined that municipal elections play a direct role in shaping local governance and require committed representatives.
Focus on Local Governance Issues
The MIM chief said priority would be given to candidates who have a clear understanding of local civic problems and the ability to engage closely with residents. Issues such as drinking water supply, sanitation, roads, electricity, and basic urban infrastructure were highlighted as areas requiring strong and accountable leadership.
Owaisi noted that the party expects its candidates to work at the grassroots level and address everyday concerns faced by urban residents. He added that the party’s organisational strength and public outreach in Telangana provide a strong base going into the elections.
Reaction to Old City Tensions
Separately, Owaisi commented on recent incidents of tension in Hyderabad’s Old City. He alleged that the police failed to effectively control the situation and said maintaining law and order remains the responsibility of the state government. He warned that such incidents could create fear among residents and called for immediate corrective steps.
Citing Maharashtra Performance
Referring to the party’s recent performance in Maharashtra municipal elections, Owaisi pointed to MIM’s success in winning 125 seats as an indication of its growing footprint. He said the party intends to carry the same momentum into Telangana’s municipal polls, with the aim of expanding its role in local bodies while retaining public trust.
