Telangana Govt Delays Rythu Bandhu Payments Amid Financial Year End
Questions Raised Over Continuity of Rythu Bandhu Disbursement
Fresh political debate has emerged in Telangana over the continuation of the Rythu Bandhu scheme, with criticism mounting against the Congress government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over delays in releasing financial assistance to farmers.
With the municipal election code coming into force, no Rythu Bandhu assistance was released in February. Concerns are now being raised that March may also pass without disbursement, as the current financial year approaches its close.
Financial Year-End Cited as Constraint
The issue has gained urgency, as the end of the financial year would mean the introduction of a new budget framework. Critics argue that once the financial year concludes, the scope for releasing pending Rythu Bandhu installments becomes limited, effectively bringing the scheme to a halt for the ongoing cycle.
Similar arguments were cited earlier by the present government to explain delays in payments. Opposition voices claim that the same financial justification was used in the past to skip one phase of Rythu Bandhu implementation.
Claims of Large-Scale Exclusion in 2025
Allegations have also been raised that during 2025, nearly 80 percent of eligible farmers were excluded from receiving Rythu Bandhu benefits, with the government citing the closure of the financial year as the reason. These claims have intensified scrutiny over policy consistency and budgetary prioritization.
The Congress government is also being criticized for releasing Rythu Bandhu assistance only once after coming to power. Political rivals allege that the scheme was revived selectively during the run-up to panchayat elections, suggesting that electoral considerations influenced the timing of the payments.
Opposition Targets Government’s Track Record
According to critics, since December 2023, three scheduled installments of Rythu Bandhu have not been released. They argue that repeated postponements have weakened farmer confidence and disrupted agricultural planning, particularly for small and marginal cultivators who depend on timely support.
The government has not issued a detailed clarification on the latest round of allegations. Administrative clarity on whether Rythu Bandhu payments will be accommodated within the current financial year remains awaited, even as political pressure continues to build.
