Telangana BC Commission Seeks OBC Status for 40 Castes
Telangana BC Commission Seeks Inclusion of 40 Castes in Central OBC List
Gap Between the State BC List and the Central OBC Recognition
The Telangana State Backward Classes Commission has once again urged the Union government to include 40 additional castes from the state in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. The commission raised the issue as part of a broader concern that several communities recognised as Backward Classes in Telangana are still not reflected in the central list.
At present, the Telangana government recognises 130 castes as Backward Classes within the state. These communities receive reservations, welfare benefits, and educational support under various state government schemes.
However, the Central OBC list includes only 90 castes from Telangana. The remaining 40 castes, though recognised by the state, do not appear in the list maintained by the Union government.
Impact on Education and Employment Opportunities
Because these 40 castes are absent from the Central OBC list, members of these communities are not eligible for reservations in central educational institutions or employment under the Union government.
The BC Commission has pointed out that this gap results in students and job aspirants from these communities missing out on opportunities available at the national level.
The commission has also flagged concerns ahead of the upcoming population census. If members of these castes are not recorded as Backward Classes during the census process, the overall BC population in Telangana could be officially counted lower than its actual size.
Concerns Over Representation in Census Data
Officials believe that an undercount of BC communities could have administrative consequences. A lower recorded population may affect the allocation of funds, welfare benefits, and policy planning intended for backward classes.
The issue has been raised several times earlier by the state government and the BC Commission with the Union government. Despite repeated representations, no final decision has yet been taken regarding the inclusion of the remaining communities.
Letter Sent to Chief Secretary
In the latest move, the Chairman of the Telangana BC Commission has written to State Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao. The commission has requested that necessary steps be taken to ensure that these 40 castes are included in the Central OBC list before the commencement of the population census.
The commission stressed that resolving the issue prior to the census would help ensure accurate representation of backward class communities in official demographic data.
