BRS Leaders Condemn TDP MP Lavu Remarks on Telangana Bill
A political row erupted after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu described February 18, 2014 — the day Parliament approved the Telangana statehood bill — as a “black day” during remarks in the Lok Sabha. The comments drew strong criticism from leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
The remarks were made in Parliament while referring to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, under which Telangana was formed as a separate state in 2014. The statement triggered reactions from Telangana political leaders who termed the comments an insult to the state.
Criticism over remarks in Lok Sabha
According to BRS leaders, the remarks made by Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu in the Lok Sabha were disrespectful to the aspirations of the people of Telangana. They said the state was formed after a prolonged movement and parliamentary approval.
Leaders also criticised what they described as silence from Members of Parliament elected from Telangana belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress.
BRS leaders stated that despite having eight MPs each from the BJP and Congress, none responded to or condemned the remarks made in the House.
Dasoju Sravan questions comments
BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan reacted strongly to the remarks made by Andhra Pradesh MPs and responded through a post on social media platform X. He questioned why leaders from Andhra Pradesh continued to criticise Telangana even after more than a decade since the state was formed.
Sravan also condemned the statements made by MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and Tennet i Krishna Prasad in Parliament. He alleged that instead of focusing on development issues in Andhra Pradesh, certain leaders were repeatedly raising issues related to Telangana.
He further said Telangana leaders were ready to discuss any matter but warned that remarks insulting the state’s identity would not be accepted.
BRS leaders warn against insulting Telangana
BRS leader and former corporation chairman Devi Prasad also criticised the remarks made in Parliament. In a statement, he said describing the day Telangana was formed as a “dark day” was unacceptable.
He recalled that the formation of Telangana came after years of protests and sacrifices by youth during the statehood movement. According to him, the day marked the fulfilment of long-standing aspirations of the people of Telangana.
Concerns over silence of Telangana MPs
Rajya Sabha member and BRS Parliamentary Party Deputy Floor Leader Vaddiraju Ravichandra also criticised the comments and expressed concern over the response from MPs representing Telangana.
He said it was unfortunate that Congress and BJP MPs from Telangana did not intervene in the Lok Sabha when the remarks were made.
Ravichandra stated that the absence of BRS members in the Lok Sabha was clearly visible during the discussion. He urged people to understand what he described as anti-Telangana positions of certain political parties.
