Speaker Issues Notices in Danam Nagender Disqualification Case
Letter to Speaker Amid Disqualification Proceedings
Hyderabad: Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender has informed the Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker that he has not resigned from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). In a letter addressed to Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on Wednesday, Nagender stated that he continues to be a member of the party and has not submitted any resignation.
The communication was sent after the Speaker issued notices in connection with disqualification petitions filed by BRS legislators alleging defection. The Speaker had sought Nagender’s response as part of the proceedings.
Clarification on Party Status and Meetings
In his letter, Nagender stated that he had no personal intimation regarding any suspension by the BRS. He asserted that claims of his resignation were based on media reports and not on any formal communication from him to the party or the Assembly.
He also referred to his participation in a Congress party meeting in March 2024, clarifying that he attended the meeting in his personal capacity. The letter emphasized that such attendance should not be construed as evidence of a formal change in party affiliation.
Objections to Disqualification Petition
Nagender informed the Speaker that his response was limited strictly to the issues raised in the disqualification petition filed by BRS MLAs. He maintained that, in line with earlier court rulings, the petition was not maintainable.
He requested that developments subsequent to the filing of the disqualification petition should not be treated as supplementary material. This included his decision to contest the 2024 general elections on a Congress party B-form while continuing as a BRS MLA.
Nagender urged the Speaker to dismiss the petition seeking his disqualification on the grounds of defection.
Speaker Issues Notices for January 30 Hearing
Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has issued notices to Danam Nagender, directing him to appear for a hearing on January 30. Notices have also been sent to BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, who filed the disqualification petition, and BJP MLA Aleti Maheshwar Reddy, asking them to be present during the proceedings.
The disqualification cases form part of a broader dispute involving allegations that 10 MLAs elected on the BRS symbol defected to the Congress. The BRS has approached the Supreme Court alleging a delay in action by the Speaker.
On January 19, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Speaker during the hearing of the matter, warning of strict action if disqualification petitions were not addressed. Against this backdrop, the issuance of notices to Nagender has assumed significance.
