The story centers on Vel Pari, a tribal ruler who resisted the combined strength of the Chera, Chola, and Pandya empires. The narrative reflects themes of resistance, power, and regional history set in ancient South India.
Reports indicate Dhanush may join the project.
Industry discussions indicate that Shankar recently checked Dhanush’s availability during the D55 pooja ceremony. There has been no official confirmation from the makers. The film is being described as a large-scale two-hero venture, with Vikram expected to headline alongside Ranveer Singh.
If confirmed, the film would mark the first collaboration between Shankar and Ranveer Singh, after their earlier proposed Anniyan remake in 2021 did not materialize. The possibility has increased industry interest in the project.
Director Describes ‘Velpari’ as His Dream Project
During an event marking the success of the novel Velpari, which has reportedly sold more than one lakh copies, Shankar described the film as his long-planned dream project. He said the scale of costumes, production design, and sets could place the film among the largest cinematic ventures undertaken.
Shankar also pointed out that advancements in filmmaking technology could help the project reach global production standards, drawing comparisons in scale with international epics.
Legal Dispute Surrounds Dhanush
Separately, actor Dhanush is facing a legal dispute related to the long-pending film Naan Rudran. Thenandal Films has issued a legal notice seeking ₹20 crore in compensation over alleged delays linked to the project, which Dhanush was initially set to act in and direct in 2016.
The production house has stated that the complete screenplay was not delivered despite approved changes, leading to financial losses. The notice warns of further legal action if the compensation is not settled within the stipulated period.
