Security Forces Tighten Vigil in Srinagar Ahead of Pulwama Anniversary

February 14 is observed across India as a day of remembrance for the Pulwama attack of 2019. The suicide bombing in Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel and left a lasting mark on the country. Since then, the date has been observed as a “Black Day” in honor of the fallen soldiers.
The attack brought grief to dozens of families and triggered nationwide mourning. Over the years, the anniversary has remained a solemn reminder of the cost of terrorism and the sacrifice of security forces.
Details of the Pulwama Attack
On February 14, 2019, a CRPF convoy was moving along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. More than 2,500 personnel were traveling in around 78 vehicles. At about 3:10 pm, a vehicle carrying over 300 kilograms of RDX rammed into a bus of the 76th Battalion in the Lethpora area of Pulwama.
The resulting explosion was powerful and was heard several kilometers away. Forty CRPF personnel were killed in the attack, making it one of the deadliest strikes on security forces in the region.
Responsibility and Aftermath
The Pakistan-based terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility for the bombing. The incident triggered strong reactions across India. Twelve days later, on February 25, Indian forces carried out an airstrike in Balakot, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
The Pulwama attack significantly shaped national security discussions and reinforced counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Security Measures Ahead of Anniversary
Ahead of the seventh anniversary, security forces increased vigilance in Srinagar. On February 13, police and security personnel conducted surprise checks in the Lal Chowk area. Hotels and surrounding locations were searched, with officials verifying identification documents and belongings of visitors.
The exercise was part of precautionary steps to maintain security and prevent any untoward incident during the anniversary period.
