Centre Announces Padma Awards 2026, Seven Padma Shri Honours for Telangana
The Union government announced the Padma Awards 2026 on the eve of Republic Day, recognising 131 individuals across the country for distinguished service in various fields. Among the awardees, seven individuals from Telangana have been selected for the Padma Shri, reflecting contributions across science, medicine, arts, engineering, and allied sectors.
Telangana’s Representation in Padma Shri List
The Telangana awardees include Gaddamanugu Chandramouli (Science), Deepika Reddy (Art – Kuchipudi Dance), Guduru Venkata Rao (Medicine), Krishnamurthy Bala Subrahmanyan (Science and Engineering), Kumaraswamy Thangaraj (Science and Engineering), Palkonda Vijay Anand Reddy (Medicine), and Mamidi Rama Reddy (posthumous) for services in animal husbandry and the dairy sector. Former UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadish Kumar has also been conferred the Padma Shri under the Delhi category.
Contributions in the Agriculture and Dairy Sector
Mamidi Rama Reddy, who passed away on October 26, 2025, was recognised posthumously for his work in livestock development and dairy farming. Through the establishment of the Sahavikasa organisation, he worked closely with cooperative societies to promote dairy farming as a sustainable income source for farmers, including efforts to increase women’s participation in the sector.
Scientific and Technological Achievements
Senior scientist Kumaraswamy Thangaraj has been honoured for nearly three decades of work in human genetic research at CCMB, Hyderabad. DRDO scientist Gaddamanugu Chandramouli, born in Madhira in October 1959, was part of the Akash missile development team and served in leadership roles within the programme for several years, contributing to India’s defence research for over three decades.
Krishnamurthy Bala Subrahmanyan was recognised for his contributions in science and engineering, though the citation remained sector-focused without specific project details.
Recognition in Arts and Medicine
Kuchipudi dancer Deepika Reddy, born in Hyderabad on September 15, 1965, received the Padma Shri for over five decades of contribution to classical dance. She is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and has performed extensively in India and abroad.
In medicine, Dr Palkonda Vijay Anand Reddy, Director of Apollo Cancer Hospitals, Hyderabad, was honoured for his work in oncology. Gastroenterologist Guduru Venkata Rao was recognised for his clinical innovations, including contributions to surgical procedures and diabetes-related medical technologies.
Political Reactions to the Awards
BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao welcomed the recognition of Telangana’s achievers, stating that the honours reflected the state’s intellectual and professional contributions at the national level. Former minister T. Harish Rao also extended congratulations, calling the awards an inspiration for future generations.
