Kohli Falls Short of Century as Rahul Guides India to ODI Win Over New Zealand
A Nervy Chase Ends in Indian Relief
India opened their ODI series against New Zealand with a hard-fought four-wicket victory in Vadodara on Sunday, holding their nerve in a tense finish that tested the hosts’ composure. While the spotlight initially rested on Virat Kohli, it was KL Rahul who ensured India crossed the line.
Kohli Anchors, Then Misses a Landmark
Chasing a challenging target, Kohli looked in complete control for most of his innings. The former captain paced his knock with authority before falling agonisingly short of what would have been his 85th international century, dismissed for 93 at a crucial juncture. His departure briefly shifted momentum in New Zealand’s favour.

Despite missing the milestone, Kohli reached a historic personal landmark during the innings, becoming the fastest batter to complete 28,000 international runs. He achieved the feat in his 624th innings, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who had taken 20 more innings to reach the mark.
Rahul’s Calm Finish Seals the Contest
With pressure mounting in the closing overs, Rahul stepped in with a composed and calculated approach. His unbeaten 29 off 21 deliveries proved decisive, guiding India home in the penultimate over and ensuring the hosts avoided a late stumble.
Shubman Gill added stability at the top with a well-crafted 56, while Shreyas Iyer narrowly missed a half-century, contributing a fluent 49 that kept India’s chase on track.
Mitchell Leads New Zealand’s Resistance
Earlier, New Zealand recovered from a disciplined start by India’s bowlers to post a competitive 300 for 8. Despite probing spells from Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj, Daryl Mitchell counter-attacked with an impressive 84 off 71 balls. He found support from Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway, both of whom registered half-centuries.
India Take Early Series Lead
The victory gives India a 1–0 lead in the series and underlines their depth in pressure situations, with experience once again proving decisive in the final moments of a closely fought contest.
