The Jana Sena Party, led by Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, found itself under scrutiny on Tuesday following serious allegations made by a woman government employee against party MLA and Government Whip Arava Sridhar. The woman released a video message outlining accusations of harassment, intimidation, exploitation, and sexual assault.
The woman stated that she is employed in the Railway Koduru area. In her video statement, she alleged that Arava Sridhar first contacted her through Facebook around one-and-a-half years ago and gradually established a personal relationship with her.
Claims of Coercion and Threats
According to the allegations, the MLA pressured her to continue an extramarital relationship and threatened to ruin her life if she resisted. She further claimed that she was subjected to repeated intimidation, including demands for nude video calls and warnings that she and her son would be left unprotected.
The woman alleged that on one occasion she was taken in a car to a secluded place, where she was sexually assaulted. She also claimed that she was threatened with death if she revealed the incident to anyone.
Allegations of Physical Abuse and Forced Abortions
In the video, the woman alleged that she was physically assaulted multiple times over the past 18 months and was forced to undergo abortions on five occasions. She further stated that the MLA had promised to marry her and asked her to divorce her husband but later refused to take responsibility.
She also alleged that the legislator contacted her husband directly and threatened him if he did not agree to divorce. Following these events, she claimed that her family distanced themselves from her, her husband left with their child, and she has been living alone for the last six months.
Political and Administrative Response
The woman alleged that the MLA abandoned her about 20 days ago and continued to issue threats thereafter. The allegations triggered widespread discussion on social media platforms. As of now, there has been no official response from Arava Sridhar or the Jana Sena Party leadership. Police authorities have not confirmed whether a formal complaint has been registered.
In response to the developments, Pawan Kalyan sought a report from local party leaders after initiating an internal inquiry. Party sources indicated that the Jana Sena chief took note of the rape allegations against the MLA.
Later in the day, Arava Sridhar’s mother addressed a press conference, dismissing the allegations and claiming that the woman was attempting to blackmail her son and damage his reputation.
Opposition Reaction
The issue drew a strong reaction from the opposition YSR Congress Party. State women’s wing president and MLC Varudu Kalyani condemned the alleged acts and accused the coalition government of failing to protect women. She demanded that a suo motu case be registered against Arava Sridhar, along with his immediate arrest, suspension from the Jana Sena Party, and disqualification as an MLA.
