Temple Incidents During Jagan’s Tenure Resurface in Political Debate
A series of incidents involving temples in Andhra Pradesh during the tenure of former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has resurfaced in political discussions, drawing renewed attention to past controversies.
Fire Incident at Antarvedi Temple
During Jagan’s period in office, the temple chariot of the Antarvedi Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple was gutted in a fire, triggering widespread concern. The incident had drawn public attention due to the temple’s religious significance and the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Vandalism at Historic Ramateertham Temple
Another major incident reported during the same period was at the centuries-old Ramateertham Bodikonda Rama temple in Vizianagaram district, which has a history spanning over 400 years. The idol of Lord Rama was found vandalised, with the head reportedly removed, causing distress among devotees.
Damage to Idols in Pithapuram
In Pithapuram, incidents of vandalism involving deity idols were also reported. These events further added to the concerns being raised at the time regarding the safety of places of worship.
Theft at Kanaka Durga Temple, Vijayawada
Additionally, three silver lions mounted on the temple chariot at the Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada were reportedly stolen. Despite the seriousness of these incidents, critics allege that there was no strong public response from the then Chief Minister.
The incidents continue to be referenced in political discourse, particularly in debates surrounding governance, accountability, and the protection of religious institutions.
