Jagan criticises Revanth govt over Telangana arrests
Jagan breaks the silence on Telangana arrests, targets Revanth government
For the first time since the formation of the Telangana government under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has publicly criticised developments in the neighbouring state. The reaction marks a departure from the party’s long-held approach of limiting its political engagement strictly to Andhra Pradesh.
The YSR Congress Party has consistently maintained that its political activity remains confined to the state, with only limited participation at the national level, largely during parliamentary sessions. Outside of legislative business linked to Andhra Pradesh, the party has rarely commented on developments elsewhere.
Condemnation of journalist arrests
Jagan Mohan Reddy strongly condemned the arrest of journalists linked to a prominent Telugu television channel operating from Telangana, describing the action as excessive and unjustified. In a public statement, he alleged that journalists were treated like criminals, with authorities resorting to intimidation that extended to their families.
He demanded the immediate release of the journalists and called for the protection of constitutional guarantees, particularly freedom of the press. The remarks were among the strongest issued by the YSRCP on a matter outside Andhra Pradesh in recent years.
Opposition reactions are already underway
In Telangana, opposition parties, including the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, had earlier criticised the arrests, accusing the state government of suppressing dissent. Their protests and statements had already placed the issue in the political spotlight within the state.
What drew attention, however, was the absence of reactions from most Andhra Pradesh-based parties. Against this backdrop, Jagan’s direct intervention, including a social media post supporting the journalists, added a new dimension to the debate.
Cross-border political implications
The television channel at the centre of the controversy broadcasts in both Telugu states, which some observers note provides a broader political context for responses from Andhra Pradesh leaders. Even so, the YSR Congress Party has historically refrained from reacting to similar incidents beyond state boundaries.
This sudden shift has triggered discussion within political circles, particularly as other parties have remained largely silent. Analysts point to widening political and ideological divisions across the Telugu states, extending even to debates around media freedom.
A rare but limited intervention
Despite the attention, the YSR Congress Party has not signalled any broader engagement with Telangana politics. The party has avoided involvement in the state’s governance issues in the past, making this intervention notable but limited in scope.
For now, Jagan’s remarks stand out as a rare instance of the YSRCP stepping beyond its usual political boundaries, without indicating a sustained change in its overall approach.
