IMD Issues Weather Warning for Eight States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for eight states, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds over the next few hours. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph in several regions, signalling a sharp change in weather conditions during the closing phase of winter.
Rain and Thunderstorm Activity to Intensify
According to the IMD, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand are likely to witness rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. The department has cautioned that the impact will not be limited to rainfall alone, as gusty winds and lightning may disrupt normal daily activities in affected areas. A drop in temperatures is also expected after the rain, with cold conditions intensifying during mornings and nights in several regions.
Similar conditions have been observed recently in the national capital region, where the IMD has already issued alerts for rain and thunderstorms. Details on weather advisories for Delhi-NCR can be found in the department’s earlier warning on IMD yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR.
Snowfall Disrupts Life in Jammu and Kashmir
Fresh overnight snowfall has affected normal life in Jammu and Kashmir. In Anantnag district, including the Pahalgam area, snow clearance operations are underway to restore road connectivity. In Kishtwar district’s Bunjwah region, heavy snowfall has severely disrupted movement, with key roads remaining blocked due to accumulated snow.
Local residents in several pockets have been forced to clear snow manually to move vehicles, raising safety concerns. The situation has made access to healthcare particularly difficult for the elderly, the sick, and pregnant women.
Himachal Pradesh Sees Rain and Snow After Long Dry Spell
Himachal Pradesh has recorded widespread rain and snowfall, ending a dry spell of nearly three months. Heavy rain was reported from Tuesday afternoon until early Wednesday morning, while higher-altitude regions, including Shimla, Manali, Narkanda, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti, received snowfall. Authorities have ordered the closure of schools for Wednesday in Manali, Banjar, and Kullu subdivisions due to weather conditions.
Avalanche Alert in Uttarakhand
In Uttarakhand, fresh snowfall has prompted an avalanche warning for higher reaches, including areas around Badrinath and Kedarnath. The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority has advised districts to remain on alert and restrict unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones until January 28 evening.
Dense Fog Impacts Visibility and Travel
Dense fog conditions were reported at several airports across north and central India on the morning of January 28. Visibility dropped to zero in Bathinda and Gwalior, while cities such as Amritsar, Gaya, and Halwara recorded very low visibility levels. The IMD warned that fog may affect flight operations and commuter movement in the region.
