IMD Warns of Heat Wave in Gujarat, Rain in Northeast
IMD Issues Heat Wave Warning for Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh; Rain Forecast in Northeast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast severe heat wave conditions across parts of western and central India on March 13, while several northeastern and Himalayan regions are expected to receive heavy rainfall and snowfall.
The contrasting weather pattern is likely to create sharply different conditions across the country, with intense heat affecting Gujarat and adjoining southwest Madhya Pradesh even as moisture-driven systems bring rain and snow to eastern and mountainous areas.
Heat Wave Conditions Over Western and Central India
According to the IMD, severe heat wave conditions are expected to persist in Gujarat and neighbouring southwest Madhya Pradesh on Friday, March 13.
Weather analyst Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and a weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, said the western region is already witnessing rising temperatures along with humid conditions.
Tripathi stated that Gujarat, Maharashtra, and West Madhya Pradesh are currently experiencing heat wave conditions, which are expected to continue through March 13.
Weather service Skymet also reported that Delhi recently recorded its hottest day of the season. The Safdarjung observatory registered 36.8 degrees Celsius, which was nearly nine degrees Celsius above the normal level.
Rising Temperatures Across Southern States
Temperature levels are also increasing in several southern regions of the country. Devendra Tripathi noted that Telangana, north interior Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh are witnessing rising heat along with humid weather conditions.
The brief cooler conditions experienced in some northern areas during the morning hours are unlikely to continue as the seasonal heat gradually strengthens across western and southern parts of India.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Northeastern States
While the western part of the country deals with rising temperatures, the northeastern region is expected to receive significant rainfall.
The IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh on March 13. Moisture flowing from the Bay of Bengal is expected to support rainfall activity in the region.
Assam, Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are also likely to experience substantial rainfall as the weather system moves across the eastern part of the country.
Snowfall Expected in Himalayan Regions
Weather activity is also likely across parts of the western Himalayan region. Devendra Tripathi said isolated locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Ladakh could receive snowfall and light rain.
The current weather system affecting the mountains is gradually weakening, but residual activity may continue to bring scattered precipitation in these regions.
Western Disturbance Likely to Affect North India
Meteorologists are also monitoring a new Western Disturbance expected to reach north India on March 14.
According to Skymet, the incoming system may bring pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms to Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana over the weekend.
Cloud cover is expected over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand in the coming days. However, significant rainfall in these areas may occur only after two to three days when conditions become more favourable.
