Delhi choose to bowl; Chloe Tryon makes WPL debut
Delhi opt to chase again as Warriorz hand Tryon her WPL debut
Delhi Capitals continued their preference for chasing as captain Jemimah Rodrigues won the toss and chose to bowl against UP Warriorz at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. It marked the third consecutive match in which Delhi opted to field first, with both sides still searching for their first win of the WPL 2026 season.
Rodrigues pointed to evening dew and the strong chasing record at the venue as key factors behind her decision. Delhi, however, came into the match after two losses while batting second, including a narrow defeat in their previous outing, where they failed to get seven runs off the final over.
Tryon steps in, Dottin sits out
The only change between the two teams came in the UP Warriorz line-up, where Chloe Tryon was brought in for Deandra Dottin. For Tryon, the match marked her long-awaited WPL debut after spending three seasons on the Mumbai Indians bench. The South African all-rounder is expected to slot in at No. 7, a role she regularly performs for her national side.
The change reshapes UP Warriorz’s bowling balance. With Tryon’s left-arm spin added to the attack, the side will rely heavily on spin options alongside seamers Shikha Pandey and Kranti Gaud. Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, and Asha Sobhana complete a varied spin unit against a Delhi batting order dominated by right-handers.
Lanning faces former side amid toss struggles
UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning once again found herself on the wrong side of the toss, continuing her run of losses in this season. The match also carried added context, with Lanning facing Delhi Capitals, the team she led to runner-up finishes in each of the first three WPL seasons.
Despite mixed results so far, UP Warriorz have experienced both scenarios this season, having batted first once and chased once. Delhi, by contrast, have persisted with the same XI as they look to address late-innings batting concerns.
Pitch expected to favour batters
Former India captain Mithali Raj, while assessing pitch No. 5, noted its brownish surface and minimal grass cover. The pitch, previously used for last year’s ODI World Cup final, was described as one that should assist batters, placing additional emphasis on execution with the ball during the first innings.
Delhi Capitals retained their combination, including Sneh Rana, who is looking to bounce back after conceding the most expensive over in WPL history earlier this season.
