Centre Rules Out Farm Loan Waiver Proposal
Centre Rules Out Farm Loan Waiver Proposal, Sitharaman Clarifies
No Proposal Under Consideration
The Union government has stated that there is currently no proposal under consideration for a farm loan waiver. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified this position, putting to rest expectations around any immediate debt relief measure for farmers.
The statement comes amid continued discussions in various quarters about the possibility of loan waivers as a means to address agrarian distress.
Focus on Institutional Credit and Direct Support
Instead of loan waivers, the Centre is prioritising strengthening agricultural financing through structured schemes. Sitharaman said the government is focusing on expanding access to Kisan Credit Cards, disbursing funds under the PM Kisan scheme, and offering loans at lower interest rates.
These measures, she indicated, are aimed at improving liquidity and ensuring sustained financial support to farmers without resorting to blanket waivers.
Increase in Collateral-Free Loan Limit
As part of its ongoing policy approach, the government has increased the limit for collateral-free agricultural loans to Rs. 2 lakh. This step is expected to ease access to credit for small and marginal farmers who may not have adequate assets to pledge.
Officials believe such measures will enable farmers to meet short-term credit needs and invest in agricultural activities more effectively.
Disappointment Among Farmers
The clarification has led to disappointment among sections of farmers who were anticipating a loan waiver announcement. Expectations had built up in recent weeks, but the government’s stance indicates a continuation of its current policy framework.
Policy Context
Farm loan waivers have been a recurring demand in several states, often raised during times of crop loss or financial stress. However, the Centre has maintained a consistent position favouring targeted financial inclusion and credit support mechanisms over broad-based waivers.
