The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Karimnagar district unit has strongly condemned the arrest of Huzurabad MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy while he was travelling to the Sammakka–Saralamma Jatara. The party described the action as unwarranted and raised concerns over the treatment of an elected public representative performing his duties.
The arrest took place when the MLA was heading towards the Jatara, one of the world’s largest tribal religious gatherings.
Visit Aimed at Assessing Arrangements and Public Issues
According to the BRS district leadership, Kaushik Reddy was visiting the Sammakka–Saralamma Jatara in his native Veenavanka mandal along with his family members. The stated purpose of the visit was to personally review arrangements at the jatara, including facilities being provided to devotees.
The MLA was assessing infrastructure, drinking water availability, medical services, and security arrangements while also interacting with devotees to understand difficulties faced on the ground.
Party Cites Responsibility of Elected Representatives
The BRS district unit stated that as a legislator, Kaushik Reddy has both a constitutional right and a public responsibility to visit public places, particularly major religious and cultural events. The party maintained that gathering feedback from devotees during a large-scale event like the Sammakka Jatara is an essential part of an MLA’s role.
The district leadership argued that preventing an elected representative from discharging such duties was inappropriate and contrary to democratic norms.
Call for Respecting Protocol and Constitutional Rights
The party emphasized that due protocol and constitutional rights applicable to legislators must be respected. It asserted that elected representatives should receive cooperation from authorities while carrying out their public responsibilities.
BRS leaders stressed that such actions set an unhealthy precedent and could obstruct representatives from effectively addressing public grievances.
District Unit Seeks Review of Incident
The Karimnagar district committee of the BRS has urged the concerned authorities to review the circumstances surrounding the arrest. The party also called for measures to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future.
The statement was issued by G. V. Ramakrishna Rao, President of the BRS Karimnagar district unit.
