As discussions continue around the future of air travel in north Andhra Pradesh, attention is increasingly turning to a practical question: how far is Bhogapuram from Visakhapatnam, and what does that mean for passengers?
Positioned near the heart of north Andhra, the airport is being projected as a major catalyst for development. Following the formation of the new coalition government, the project is being hailed in policy circles as one of its most significant development successes so far, with expectations that the airport will emerge as a key growth engine for Andhra Pradesh.
The Distance Debate Gains Momentum
Even as excitement builds around the new airport, the distance between Visakhapatnam and Bhogapuram has become a subject of active public debate. The two locations are roughly 50 kilometres apart.
Under ideal conditions—assuming the proposed six-lane approach roads by the Centre and the State are completed—the journey is estimated to take about one hour and 30 minutes. Until then, travellers will have to rely largely on existing routes via Anandapuram junction, which could further affect travel time.
For passengers departing from Visakhapatnam, both distance and time are emerging as practical concerns, particularly for short domestic trips.
Concerns Over Domestic Air Travel
Against this backdrop, Vishnu Kumar Raju, BJP MLA from Visakhapatnam North, has made pointed observations on the issue. Speaking to the media after a DRDA meeting, he underlined that using Bhogapuram Airport for domestic travel could significantly increase both travel time and distance for passengers flying to destinations such as Vijayawada.
He suggested that the existing Visakhapatnam airport should continue handling domestic flights, rather than shifting all operations to Bhogapuram. According to him, retaining domestic services in Visakhapatnam would better serve local passengers and avoid unnecessary inconvenience.
A Model for International Operations
Drawing a comparison with Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Raju proposed that Bhogapuram be designated primarily for international flights. In such a model, domestic travellers heading to cities like Vijayawada or Tirupati could continue to rely on shorter, more accessible routes from Visakhapatnam.
His remarks come amid reports suggesting that the Visakhapatnam airport—currently under Navy control—may be closed once Bhogapuram becomes operational. Raju has urged that this not be done, arguing that both airports can coexist and grow simultaneously, benefiting the region as a whole.
What Lies Ahead
With discussions also underway on whether domestic services should be excluded from Bhogapuram altogether, the final decision now rests with the Centre. How the State and Central governments navigate the operational future of the Navy-controlled Visakhapatnam airport will be closely watched.
From a practical standpoint, many observers believe the MLA’s suggestions merit serious consideration, as authorities weigh development ambitions against passenger convenience in shaping the next phase of aviation in north Andhra Pradesh.
