A distressing incident has been reported from Puttur in Tirupati district, where a 28-year-old woman allegedly killed her two young daughters before taking her own life. The deceased has been identified as Padma, a resident of Neshanur village in Puttur mandal. Her daughters, Teja aged six and Lasya aged five, also died in the incident. Police have taken Padma’s husband, Shivashankar, into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Marriage Against Family Opposition
Padma, daughter of Kanneppa Reddy, and Shivashankar from Thoruru panchayat were known to each other since their college days in Puttur, where they studied for their degree. Their relationship led to marriage in 2019 despite opposition from Padma’s parents, who had objected due to caste differences and Shivashankar’s lack of stable employment at the time. The couple later had two daughters.
Financial Strain and Domestic Distress
Over the years, the family reportedly faced persistent financial difficulties. Monthly expenses such as school fees for the children, house rent, and daily household needs had become a burden. Local elders are said to have advised Shivashankar to take responsibility for the family, following concerns that he was neglecting household matters.
Shivashankar later informed the family that he had secured employment in Sri City and promised to manage the household properly. However, financial stress reportedly continued, with outstanding debts remaining unpaid.
Final Conversation and Suicide Note
On the day of the incident, Padma reportedly contacted her husband and questioned him about repayment of a loan taken through a DWCRA self-help group. When she learned that the dues had not been cleared, she is believed to have become deeply distressed.
Police said Padma wrote a note expressing anguish over her life circumstances and financial burden. She also referred to the hardships she and her children had endured after marrying against her parents’ wishes. The note indicated emotional distress and hopelessness.
Investigators said Padma first hanged her two daughters in the bedroom before taking her own life by hanging in the hall of the house. The incident came to light later, prompting police intervention.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Local police reached the scene and registered a case. Shivashankar has been taken into custody for questioning as part of routine procedure while authorities examine all aspects surrounding the deaths, including financial and domestic conditions.
Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and confirm details mentioned in the note. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, and legal proceedings are continuing.
Broader Administrative Concern
The incident has once again drawn attention to the impact of prolonged financial stress and domestic hardship on vulnerable families. Authorities have reiterated the importance of community and institutional support systems for families facing economic and emotional strain. Police stated that awareness and timely intervention remain crucial in preventing such tragedies.
