Andhra Pradesh Police Prepare to Record Maoist-Free Status After Surrender
Final senior leader set to surrender before DGP
Andhra Pradesh is set to mark a significant development in its internal security landscape as Maoist activity declines sharply. Police officials are preparing to declare the state effectively Maoist-free, with senior leader Chelluri Narayana Rao expected to surrender.
Narayana Rao, identified as the only remaining member from Andhra Pradesh in the Maoist central committee, is scheduled to surrender before the DGP along with his group.
Decline follows encounters and surrenders
The reduction in Maoist presence has been attributed to a series of encounters and surrenders over time. Several key leaders had earlier surrendered before the Telangana Police, weakening the organisational structure.
Officials indicated that Narayana Rao had recently established contact with Andhra Pradesh Police, leading to negotiations for surrender.
Operation Kagar drives coordinated action
The development aligns with the center’s ‘Operation Kagar,’ aimed at eliminating Maoist activity across the country. Andhra Pradesh is now positioned to meet this objective following sustained efforts by security agencies.
Authorities are expected to formally announce the status after the surrender process is completed.
Historical presence of the Maoist movement in Andhra Pradesh
The Maoist movement in Andhra Pradesh has roots in earlier Naxalite activity. Initially known as Naxalites, the group later evolved into the People’s War Group under the leadership of Kondapalli Seetharamaiah.
The movement had a strong presence in the undivided state and expanded to multiple regions over time.
Security response and enforcement measures
To counter the insurgency, the state police established the Greyhounds force, which played a key role in operations against Maoist groups. The unit also provided training support to police forces in other states.
The Maoist group had previously carried out attacks on public representatives, officials, and government infrastructure.
Shift in national strategy against Maoists
Following the formation of the NDA government at the center in 2014, a coordinated strategy was adopted to address insurgency in regions, including Dandakaranya. The center has reiterated its objective of eliminating Maoist presence nationwide.
Statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have emphasized a timeline for achieving this goal.
Context
With the expected surrender of Chelluri Narayana Rao, Andhra Pradesh’s Maoist leadership is likely to come to an end. Officials view this as a culmination of long-term operations and policy measures.
