Karur stampede case: CBI summons Vijay again
CBI issues fresh summons in Karur stampede probe
Actor Thalapathy Vijay has been summoned again by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the Karur stampede case. The agency has asked him to appear in Delhi on January 19 as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragedy.
The case relates to a stampede in Karur that resulted in the death of 41 people, triggering widespread concern and prolonged legal scrutiny.
Previous questioning and agency focus
Vijay had earlier appeared before the CBI, where questioning reportedly lasted nearly six hours. During that session, he is said to have addressed the circumstances surrounding the event and the role of organisers linked to the incident.
The central agency continues to examine responsibility and accountability, as the case has drawn national attention due to both the scale of the tragedy and the involvement of a prominent public figure.
Long legal trail before CBI takeover
The investigation has moved through multiple stages since the incident. Initially, the Tamil Nadu government appointed a one-member commission to inquire into the stampede. That panel was later set aside after the Supreme Court of India observed that further investigation was necessary.
Before the matter reached the Supreme Court, the Madras High Court had constituted a special investigation team to probe the causes of the tragedy. Following the transfer to the CBI, the Supreme Court directed that the probe be monitored by a panel headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.
Parallel spotlight on ‘Jana Nayagan’ certification
Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan has also been in focus due to a separate legal dispute over its certification. The film’s producer has approached the Supreme Court seeking clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification.
The apex court is scheduled to hear the plea on January 15, after a division bench of the Madras High Court stayed an earlier order directing the CBFC to grant certification.
Industry voices weigh in
Actor Kamal Haasan recently commented on the certification issue, stressing the importance of freedom of expression and transparent processes for artists and the wider film ecosystem.
As the legal proceedings continue on multiple fronts, Vijay is expected to comply with the CBI summons as the investigation into the Karur stampede moves forward.
