Winter Chill Tightens Grip on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as Weather Systems Shift
Cloud Cover and Cold Drizzle Set the Tone for the Day
Residents of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are experiencing a distinctly wintry day, marked by dense cloud cover, chilly winds, and light mist-like precipitation in some areas. While no major rainfall is forecast, the atmosphere remains cold and damp, creating conditions similar to a fine drizzle accompanied by sharp winter chill.
Low-Pressure System Weakens Near Sri Lanka
A low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal has been moving toward Sri Lanka’s eastern coast and is expected to approach Tamil Nadu later today, January 11. However, the system has already weakened significantly after crossing northern Sri Lanka and is likely to dissipate entirely by evening.
Despite its weakening, the system has contributed to the formation of a trough over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This trough, combined with prevailing cold conditions, has led to a noticeable drop in temperatures and intermittent light drizzles in isolated areas.
Andhra Pradesh: Cloudy Skies, Isolated Drizzles in Rayalaseema
The trough’s impact is more pronounced over Andhra Pradesh. Cloud circulation extending from Telangana is also influencing the state, particularly Rayalaseema, where dense cloud cover is expected throughout the day. Coastal Andhra and North Andhra will also see cloudy skies, though the intensity will be comparatively lower.
No widespread rainfall is forecast for the state. However, isolated light drizzles may occur in parts of Rayalaseema. These are not expected to disrupt daily activities or cause inconvenience to the public.
Strong Winds Add to the Cold
Wind speeds have increased across surrounding seas and coastal areas. Over the Arabian Sea, wind speeds are reaching up to 45 kmph, while the Bay of Bengal is seeing winds of around 46 kmph. Along the Andhra Pradesh coastline, strong and extremely cold winds are blowing, significantly intensifying the chill.
People visiting or living in coastal areas are advised to exercise caution due to these icy winds. In Telangana, wind speeds are relatively moderate at around 12 kmph, while parts of Andhra Pradesh are experiencing gusts of up to 32 kmph.
Temperatures Drop Further Across Both States
Daytime temperatures have fallen noticeably. Telangana is recording a maximum temperature of around 24°C, while Andhra Pradesh stands at approximately 28°C. Night temperatures are even lower, with Telangana dipping to 18°C and Andhra Pradesh to about 20°C.
These are average readings, but colder conditions are expected in agency areas, forest regions, and locations near rivers. In these areas, residents may experience biting cold winds capable of causing severe discomfort, and precautions are strongly advised.
Humidity Levels Signal Heavy Nighttime Chill
During the daytime, humidity levels remain moderate—about 33% in Telangana, 44% in Andhra Pradesh, and 58% in Rayalaseema. Since rainfall typically requires humidity levels above 70%, daytime rain chances remain minimal.
At night, however, humidity rises sharply. Telangana records around 54%, Andhra Pradesh 76%, and Rayalaseema as high as 83%. As a result, Rayalaseema is likely to witness heavy dew formation overnight. While no rain is expected, this dew may fall like fine drizzle, further intensifying the cold.
Developing Systems Elsewhere Hint at Changing Patterns
Near the equatorial region, another low-pressure system is strengthening and is expected to intensify into a cyclone by January 12. Currently referred to by its code name “145,” the system is rotating at speeds of around 80 kmph, with further intensification anticipated.
Although this system will not directly impact Andhra Pradesh or Telangana, it is contributing to increased cloud formation near the equator.
Meanwhile, Cyclone Koji, located northeast of Australia, is moving at speeds of about 75 kmph. Its influence is increasing cloud cover across Southeast and East Asia. Additionally, extremely cold winds originating from Antarctica are advancing toward Southeast Asia.
Cold to Persist, February Rains Possible
Taken together, these global and regional weather developments suggest that colder conditions may persist even after the Sankranti period in January. There are also early indications that February could see weather patterns favorable for rainfall.
For now, residents of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are advised to remain cautious, stay warm, and be prepared for continued cold and damp conditions over the coming days.
